David Smart,
Yes, dragging MS Office shortcuts work as I tried it before I wrote the
reply. And Genevieve also confers it.
Genevieve,
If you create an Office shortcut by right clicking on the desktop and then
searching for the Office program file you will not create the same type of
shortcut as is obtained by dragging from the START menu. To check this go to a
shortcut for Word under START, right click it, choose Properties, and look at
the result. In my case the Target is not an identified exe file for Word but
just a statement of the version of Office and it is greyed out so it can not be
changed. I am not saying that you can not create a shortcut by searching for
the exe file, I am just saying that it will not be the same as dragging.
Whether or not that is important to Word I do not know.

I did not know about that. I did try to copy an office application (from the
start menu) and when I right click and drag the item the menu stated: copy or
move. I chose copy and it copied a shortcut to the desktop...
In any case the other way to create a shortcut would be to right click
somewhere on the desktop and chose create shortcut and then locate the location
of the application. This involves "digging in " in order to locate it...
good luck
Genevieve

This is mostly true, however, office products often have a special sort of
shortcut - not a normal Windows one. IIRC you can't simply drag these to
the desktop, as they are not real shortcuts.
But, give it a try. If it works, great.
