Ok..if it's an xls file and Excel tells you it doesn't recognize the format,
it's probably corrupt.
I don't know how Macs handle this stuff and I don't know how the Mac
versions of Excel are set up...but in the PC versions, if the computer
crashes while you have a file open in Excel, and you have the AutoRecover
feature turned on, when you reboot and re-open Excel, if the file was
successfully recovered, it just opens up in Excel automatically.
You can try Kathy's idea...make a copy of the file and see if you can change
the extension to txt and open it in Notepad...in a PC you can change it to a
csv file also and let Excel try to open it, but I don't know if csv files
are even an acceptable Mac format.
If I owned a Mac, I would tell you to send me the file and I would see if I
could get the data out of it for you, but I'm a PC gal unfortunately.
You might want to see if you can find a group that does Mac support and see
if anyone in there can help you more. Sorry, I'm really limited on recovery
stuff with a Mac.

Thanks, Linda,
Yes the computer (the whole dang thing) crashed. Its a mac (shh.. don't
tell the folks in Cupertino that this stupid thing crashes more than any
other computer I've seen). Office not X but the one just before it Aha,
2001.
I got the file out of Recovered Items 83 folder in my trash, pulled it out.
It has the Excel logo and is xls.
And, it was Excel, word was not involved. The whole stupid computer crashes
as I go to a website to get an address. (and it has crashed again since my
first email grrrr....)
