[mso] .RTF causing problem in Word2003

When I open a document saved in .rtf format into Word2003, it comes up
in extremely small font size, despite the fact that my settings still
show Times Roman 12 as the default.
The only way I can read such a file (it's that small!) is to click on a
button named "READ", which appears on the tool bar ONLY when an .rtf
document is opened. This takes me to another screen, where the type
font is larger, but the document is in a strange vertically rectangular
shape.
Ever since this happened (possibly the first time I opened an .rtf
document, but I'm not sure), when I open Word to start a new document,
the font is the same extremely small size as the .rtf document, again
despite my settings being for TR 12. However, if I open a word
document (.doc file), it comes in at the correct font size, and I can
edit it with no problems.
I have searched for every possible setting that might be causing this,
but can't find anything, and can not find anything at the MS Knowledge
base, no matter what key words I try.
I also use WordPerfect, and the same .rtf documents that open so
strangely in Word, open in WP in the proper size.
Has anyone else ever experienced this? I'm about read to uninstall and
reinstall my whole Office Suite.
