[mso] Problems with Mail Merge in Word 2007?

I have been doing mail merges for years but yesterday encountered a
situation that I was unable to resolve.
When setting up the mail merge document, the mail merge field appears as a
field code.  When I toggle the field code and attempt to preview results, it
bounces right back to the field code.  And, essentially there is no way I
can preview the results one record at a time unless I complete the merge.

I'm using Word 2007 with Vista.

Is this a bug?  Is there a fix?

Please tell me there is.  Operationally, I know I am doing everything
correctly.
