[mso] Problem with "find and replace" option in Excel

I am having a problem with the "find & replace" option. I've used it many
times before with no problems, but this time it does not change. This is a
spreadsheet we have used for years. Each month we create a new tab and use the
"find and replace" option to pull the prior month data into the current month
for comparison.
I usually do a find and replace - find next for a highlighted area. When I do
this, no change is made. If I try to do a find and replace all, it brings up a
update dialogue box with no file name. To get rid of the dialogue box, I have
to hit cancel repeatedly until it goes away. In this instance, when it finally
goes away, there are REF errors in the cells. But, if I go and put a direct
reference to the cell, the value comes in fine.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Peggy
