[mso] Re: PowerPoint Question

Catherine,
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but "consistent timing" and
"PowerPoint" should never be used in the same sentence. PowerPoint doesn't
do exact timing well at all.

One factor is whether the presentation is being played or re-played. The
first time a presentation is played, PowerPoint loads it into memory.
Therefore, the second time you go through the slides, it will play faster.

Another factor is what else is running on your machine. If you want
consistent timing, stop all other programs. Especially stop your email
program - it will grab time from PPT to check for new mail. If you can
disable your connection to the web, that will help too... as long as you
remember to set your wireless to not check for a connection.

If you are running the presentation from a CD, the timing issues will be
even worse. In this case, you are adding the speed of the CD drive into the
mix. That will only add more delays, etc.

If you really want to do the timing exactly as you see it, then the best
thing to do is to record the presentation as a video (use a screen recorder)
and then add the music to the video. That way you can sync the two using
software that is designed for that.

One last idea: If the presentation is pictures, you might want to consider
using MovieMaker, PhotoStory, or some other such program to create it. You
might find it easier to get the timing right.

Subject: [mso] PowerPoint Question

I am using Office 97 PowerPoint to create a slideshow. I am synching music
(a CD track) with the slides. The problem that I am having is that the show
will play fine several times, then all of a sudden the timings will be off.
However, when I go back and look at the settings, nothing has changed. Any
ideas? This presentation is pretty important to me and the timings are
critical.
Thanks so much!
Cathi
