[mso] Pictures dissapear in Word 2000

I have a problem when inserting pictures in a Word 2000 document.  A frame 
shows up in the document but no picture.  The picture is there since it will 
print, also by clicking editing another window appears and I can see and work 
on the picture. 
I have looked into all the options that I could think of but the problem 
continues.  This is new and I don't think I have changed anything to create 
this new situation.  I mhave Windows XP home.  Be grateful for any suggestions.
