Unfortunately (!) the key to getting the right answer is to ask the right
question:
Is there any way in Word to have the page number appear on all pages of a
section except the first page of that section?
Answer: Yes. In Page Layout choose "Different First Page".
However, figuring out the "right question" can be "a bit" of work.
