[mso] Outlook2000 edit problem

Outlook2000 on XP pro with Word2000 as default editor.
Some messages can be edited directly then saved back to Outlook.
Some messages, upon selecting edit create a numbered Word document that will
be saved to disk independent / outside of Outlook.
What causes this behavior? What can I do to stabilize the response to an
edit request?
