[mso] Re: Outlook XP compacting pst

I don't believe there is a way to compact it automatically, other than to
set an auto archive for old info.

But you might want to check out this article and just create your own manual
archive PST files. I keep one working PST. Then...every few months...I open
my PST for that year and just drag off files after a certain date or folders
that are no longer active issues. That puts them in a separate PST so I'm
not continually asking OL to drag open tons of old email just because I
don't want to delete old files. This keeps my current PST filled with more
current email.

Then...should I ever need something that is older than what I have in my
current files, I just open the PST for that year (or a previous year if
older than this year) and run a search of check the appropriate file for the
email I need.

This method not only helps keep my current PST file workable, but provides a
nice backup of old stuff. And I have TONS of email saved going back years.
After a year or two, I move those really old PSTs off to a CD for storage. I
can drag up an email back to 1994!<g>

See this article for details:

By the way...the current PST file limit for XP is 2 gig. For 2003...it's so
high, no user would have the PC space to reach that limit, so it's not an
issue in that version. Although, I still use my same method even with 2003.

Subject: [mso] Outlook XP compacting pst

Hi,
I would like to know if or do anyone know of a way to compact the pst
files without doing manually?
I know how to compact them is there a more simple way to do it like asking
outlook to do it automatically when it shutdown or something?
Coz my pst file is about 80mb and if it gets to 90mb after a day of
messages, it refuse to shut down. In simple, its not there on the task bar
showing its running but in the process listof task manager, its there.
And if I compact it, it will work perfectly.
I don't think the pst file I got has reach the limit of outlook XP as far
as I remember, I think its like a few gb or 3gb or so before outlook xp
say no.
So do anyone got any idea on that?

Novice Users - People who are afraid that simply pressing a key might
break their
computer.
Intermediate Users - People who don't know how to fix their computer
after they've
just pressed a key that broke it.
Expert Users - People who break other people's computers.
