In Outlook Express, click Tools > Options then click the "Spelling" tab. Be 
sure "English" is selected in the pull-down window.

This discussion is verging on being beyond the topic of this group. For

Sorry, Jan, I have no other advice except to Google for spell checkers. I know 
several exist that will work with Outlook Express.

You might also try a reinstall of Office, but get further advice from others 
before you attempt that drastic action.
