Actually, It may be easier than that.  Do a google on XP serial number
changer, if the Versions are close together or the same, run the serial
number changer, put in the legal serial and update away.

I'll go back to my burrow now.

It depends what versions she has...

If the illegal is Pro and the legal is Home Retail she will have a problem.
(Most illegal copies I have seen are Pro.)

If they are both the same and she bought a legal retail (boxed) copy, she
should be able to do a repair - (Boot from the CD and choose R at the second
opportunity, not the first.)

I'm somewhat new in this group.  I have a problem to resolve for my niece.
