Valerie,

I stopped using Norton about 6 months ago, and I had used it for the past 5
years. It's too big and used up way too much of the system resources. Plus
you always get screwed by the annual subscription nonsense. Been there,
done that. I now use a free antivirus tool suggested by many reputable
techie people. AVG is the name, I also now use a free firewall, Sygate.
Both are doing a fabulous job.

Here is the link for AVG, get the free personal edition

Here is the link for Sygate, again get the free personal edition.

Good luck to you!

Subject: [mso] Norton Anti-Virus 2002

When I purchased Norton Anti-Virus 2002/2002 (Version 8.07.17C) in the year
2002
I was under the impression that as long as I kept it updated and paid my
annual
subscription fee to Symantec/Norton that I was protected from Virus'. But I
was totally wrong and if Norton had informed me of this I would of taken the
correct steps to keep my OS protected.
As it turned out that lack of information from Norton has just cost me $200
CAD.

It appears that while my Norton 2002 was being updated it really didn't
protect
me from virus's that are covered under the Norton 2004 version package. My
computer
picked up the "W32.Spybot.Worm" and then the "Trojan.Qhost" virus. Initally
my Norton informed my that I had the worms but then also said it was not
possible
to repair them and to go to their site for more info. I went to their site
and
found the repair information but the instructions were over my level of what
I do in the Registry entries. Then Norton stopped informing me of the two
Virus'
and told me that my system was clean. But it was NOT - the end result was a
total shut-down of everything on my computer!

So into the Computer Repair Shop my OS went. I have dealt with this store
for
nearly 10 years but my top techy there was unable to locate these two virus'
even though it was clearly visible I had something major infecting my
system.

What he did was put my HD into a tower that he had just installed Norton
2004
in and ran that on my HD. Then the new Norton 2004 found the two virus' and
repaired them.

So end result - My Norton 2002 still boots up as "disabled" and as I bought
the 2002 program online and Norton installed the program online I do not
have
the original set-up files to do another install - so at each boot-up I have
to manually re-set my "Auto-Protect". If Norton had of informed me that
paying
an annual fee for protection does not really protect me on new virus' I
would
not of paid it and instead, with each new Norton release, purchased that
instead.

And I now find that my Norton 2002 will not do "Live Updates"!

I feel Norton mis-represented itself by not telling me this. If I now
purchase
a new version of Norton my annual subscription that I have just paid for is
not transferable.
Does anyone have any suggestions please? thank you - Valerie
