[mso] Mail Merge Troubles with format and content

I am using mail merge in word driven by an excel spreadsheet to fill a large 
number of fields in a word document.  There are two problems.  
(1)The format of the numbers does not come through, e.g. currency values lose 
the $ and commas.  I have a partial answer to this problem, but cannot find any 
reference for learning the general area of toggling field codes and adding 
formats
(2)In this application, occasionally text is entered in a cell that normally 
carries a number.  The text comes through in mail merge as zero, e.g. 0)  I 
cannot find any referneces to mail merge beyond simply adding names and 
addresses to letters.
CAn anyone suggest a good reference, or give some hints abotu my two problems.
