First of all...yes, it's silly to waste money paying for answers from MS
when there are so many forums like this where you can get the answer for
free. Particularly, since most all questions have been asked/answered
before.
As for your licensing question...here's the deal. The installed version =
of
2000...was it PREINSTALLED on the computer that you purchased? Or did =
you go
out and buy it in a box and then installed it yourself? THAT is the main
issue.
If you purchased the computer with Office preinstalled at the =
factory...then
YOU do not own the license and you cannot upgrade because the license
belongs to the COMPUTER and once that computer no longer is
operational...neither is your license to any version of Office that was
preinstalled on that computer.
However, if you purchased it via boxed version you bought at the store =
(or
downloaded trial that you later purchased yourself)...then YOU own the
license and you are free to uninstall it from the old PC and reinstall =
it to
the new PC...or, in your case, as long as you have the old CD, you can =
just
download 2003 (or buy upgraded boxed version), as suggested, and =
purchase
that version, using the old CD as the "previous version" to insert when
asked for it upon installing the upgraded version.
So many people THINK that it's a great deal to have the software
preinstalled. However, the problem is that if you buy the software as
preinstalled...you don't own the license and can't LEGALLY use the =
software
anywhere else.
NOTE...because of this fact in the licensing (which you'd be wise to
actually READ, by the way<smile>)...Microsoft (and other software =
companies)
NOW only preinstall a TRIAL version of the software. In this case, you =
did
not actually PAY the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer...the maker of =
the
PC you purchased) the cost of the software. You get a timed version to =
TRY.
Then, should you with to purchase it...even though someone else actually
installed the trial version for you at the OEM, you are not paying the =
OEM
for the license, but rather you are paying Microsoft for the license. =
Hence,
it's the same as if you bought it in a box or downloaded/installed it
yourself and in that case...you WILL own the software. That means you =
can
install it on a future system should you need to.
Also...in the case of Office, note that you can actually install it on =
TWO
systems...but one MUST be a "portable device" (i.e., handheld, laptop, =
etc).
You get a license for one standard PC and one portable device...meaning =
you
can install it on both a home PC and your laptop (if you have both). As =
long
as both of those devices are used BY YOU...then you are still within the
legal agreement of the license.
So the bottom-line is...who did you pay for the software. If it came =
"free"
with the computer...you cannot upgrade. If you paid Microsoft or a store =
for
a boxed version (and assuming you still have the CD)...then yes, you can
purchase an upgrade.

Subject: [mso] MS Office Upgrade or New purchase
Hi guys,
I guess this is a licencing issue (I was going to ask MS but at $35 per=20
question, I demured).
I have a five year old machine with Office 2k installed. I want to scrap =
the
machine and get a new one. I would like to install Office 2003 on the =
new
one.=20
How can I purchase and install an UPGRADE version of Office for the new=20
machine? Seems like I am being cheated if I have to purchase a new =
licence.
