Yes. Let's have discussions. I see it as a learning opportunity.

If we were in a club that met face to face, we'd have opportunities to
talk about many things not necessarily related to club business. While
this "discussion group" isn't exactly the same thing, the principle is.
The most recent topic was apropos because it did relate to a certain
degree to the subject matter.

I'm here to learn whatever I can learn and share whatever I have to
share and I'd like to do that in an atmosphere of free speech and
without having to worry about the topic Gestapo.

For what it may be worth.

OK...let's take a vote....who thinks these kinds of discussions should
be held here and who doesn't?

Speak now or forever hold your peace....I certainly NEVER want to be
accused of "censorship", Jim....but I also am proud that this group has
never dissolved in the flame-wars I've seen on other groups and I will
do whatever I have to do to prevent that.

So it's up to the members....place your vote by replying to this post,
between now and Friday, June 11th at noon, EDT

I'll keep a count and post the final decision....if you don't vote, then
you don't get counted....sorry, that's about as fair as I can be....and
I can't let this vote go any further than Friday cuz I'm heading up to
Canada this weekend and really can't be bothered while I'm on vacation
;-)

Vote YES if you feel discussions should be allowed, of opinions of the
good and bad, favorite and not-so-favorite parts of the programs, and
which programs people prefer for which tasks.

Vote NO if you feel this group should only address questions and
problems people are having and avoid discussions of people's opinions
about the Office software.

I will assume Jim votes YES and Ian votes NO unless I hear differently.
So, far that's 1 and 1...actually, I'll cast my vote now of YES also, so
that's
2 yeses and one no.

Linda/All--

I've always found this newsgroup to be a good source of Office-related
info because it comes from real end users, not from some Redmond-based
spokesperson paid to peddle The Company line. To me, it's that
separation that has given the group freedom, and it's that freedom
that's given the group its usefulness. But now, over the past 24 hours
or so I've watched what I consider a good and useful thread vanish
without a trace because it bothered a few folks.

That's not moderation, Linda; that's censorship.

You wrote, "...it's not worth it if it makes members uncomfortable." If
open, honest, wholly on-topic discussion makes some members
uncomfortable, perhaps they can hang out in any of the myriad of
Micro$oft's Official Newsgroups, where they're guaranteed to never hear
a dissenting opinion. Yes, it's your group, and yes, you've done a
better job than most at moderating what could have easily become a
confusing, hand-waving, free-for-all. But still, if this group is going
to avoid on-topic discussions because a few right-hearted but
wrong-headed folks complain, I suppose I'm the one who needs to look
elsewhere.
