[mso] Re: Inserting graphics in Word 2000

Not sure, looks like you're doing the right things. In checking, I'm not
finding a difference, they both seem to behave the same way and the help
menu gives the same results for either query. Have you checked your link
settings in the link menu? Below is from the help menu. I tried inserting
under both methods, then successfully updated the graphic via both methods,
by selecting graphic and F9, and the edit/link/update option. Also, is
the picture set as inline with text or in front of text? Mine defaults to
'in front of text', which seems to get rid of lots of my graphic problems.
Try toggling those settings and then updating. I don't think it's the
updating part that's breaking, since you're getting a change of graphic to
'placeholder' when you update. Hope that helps, Cathy

"After you create a linked object or embedded object in your document, you
can make changes to the object.

To edit a linked object in your document, use the Links command on the Edit
menu.

By default, linked objects are set for automatic updating. This means that
Word automatically updates the linked information every time you open the
destination file or any time the source file changes when the destination
file is open.

If you prefer, you can change a linked object's setting so that the linked
object is updated only when you choose to manually update it.

To ensure that your document is always up-to-date, you can also update
linked objects whenever you print the document.

To prevent updates, you can lock individual linked objects. When you lock a
link, Word uses the last information available from the source file.

You can also permanently break the connection between a linked object and
its source file."

Can someone explain the difference between the "Link to File" and the
"Insert and Link" options on the Insert Picture dialog box in Word 2000?
I'm trying to update screen shots in a Word doc and thought that if the
pictures were inserted a certain way you could edit the graphic source
file and it would then update in Word. But I'm finding that after I
edit the source file and go back to Word and try to update the picture,
I get a blank square where the picture was...looks like the placeholder
box for graphics (Picture placeholders is NOT selected in Options).
Here's how I'm doing this:

1. Insert original graphic:
Insert | Picture | From File, navigate to graphic file, then click
Insert button and select "Insert and Link"

2. (some days later) Edit .JPG source file and save with original
graphic file name

3. Open Word doc containing the graphic file, select the picture whose
source file was updated in #2 above, and press F9.

After pressing F9 I have the blank square. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks for any help.

Diane
