Responding to my own question. A clue, maybe. The background page number
WILL print, if I print one page at a time using "Print current page." But
will not print if I try to print the entire thing. Does that tell anyone
anything? It just baffles me. -Robert

Okayyyyy, I have now page numbers smack dab in the center of the page, gray
colored. I like it. It is ideal for what I want to do.
New question now: Why won't the dang thing print WITH the background gray
print? Oh, the page prints just fine, but *without* the background page
number. It previews with page number showing. So I thought, well, toner is
getting low. I swapped out toner cartridges and there is no difference.
So the problem must be in my document somewhere. If I make it coal black, it
makes reading the page close to impossible.
Janine- I take it your example is working? I do not mind if you send it
directly to me so I can compare what I have with yours. My email is

Thank you.

Sorry Robert I like to attach example document and cannot - such is life.
Go to Header or Footer on your insert autotext if you have MS defaults you
will see PAGE as an insert - it is an automatic page number or just use Page
of the header foot toolbar (an icon). Select the Field for Page and Change
Font Size to be whatever you like 72 or 127 or whatever fits - change font
to grey shade percentage you like and use Tables Toolbar to rotate the PAGE
field when you have position it on either left middle or right of page.
On page 2 past a copy of the PAGE field as formatted (I always use Different
First Page) now you will have 1 and 2 in grey scale font size you select
left centre or right on page in background header or footer.
See how you you go - an example is so much easier....

Subject: [mso] Inserting giant page numbers in background?
I have made some sheets labeling toys, and would like to put a page number
in the background as large as possible. I tried to insert the number "27"
(without quotes) in the background utilizing footers, turned counter
clock-wise 90 degrees.
Problem: "27" gets on every page.
Question: How do I print page numbers in the background, watermark-like so
that it is a grayish color and does not result in the same number on each
page? Do I need to make all 137 pages separately?
Thank you,
Robert
