Michele,
It sounds as if the 'edited' .pst file you have been sent has no data in it.
Maybe you should try exporting your data (for editing) as a .csv file, ask
your friend to edit it in Excel and then resave it as a .csv file, keeping
the same structure. Then import the edited file either into a new Contacts
folder or allowing it to overwrite duplicates.
