That was the problem. When I unchecked "picture placeholder", the images
became visible. Many thanks for your help!

In the summary of the article you referenced (

appears,
"given that this is an undocumented feature, use it at your own risk, if at

all, and do so warily!". I have enough troubles with standard features of
Word, therefore, I'm not likely to be messing with rotated inline pictures.
