I don't know. But Excel MVP, Jon Peltier, is the Excel graph guru and he's
written many articles on Excel graphs, so he may have one that covers this
subject.
Try this link, which lists all his article, to see if one hits the mark for
you:

If not, try hitting his web site, which you'll find linked from his bio,
here:

And if all else fails, you can hit the Excel Graph group in the free
Microsoft Newsgroups, which you'll find linked from here:

Good luck...

Subject: [mso] How do I do graph overlays
I know that this has to be able to be done but I am not good enough at Excel
to do it.
I have created a database in Access for process and compliance control for
Waste Water Treatment Plants (i.e. Sewer plants).
Most of the data is daily data or hourly data and works well with a wide
variety of graphs. What I do is to use Access to extract and filter the data
and send to Excel for analysis and for creating EPA compliance forms. I have
that pretty well under control and think it is pretty slick.
But there is one set of tests that we do --actually a few in which the data
is daily but multiple data points.
Here is an example of the data for a Settleometer test. We do these twice a
day. One day and one night shift.
What we do is really simple and probably easier to explain the test
You take 1000 ml of Mixed Liquor (the activated sludge in the basin) and
simply shake it up and pour into a a graduated cylinder and record the
height of the sludge as it settles--every 5 minutes for 30 minutes. So at
the beginning it is of course 1000 ml.
So we have data like the following for each test
5 min 500ml
10 min 370 ml
15 min 320 ml
20 min 270 ml
25 min 250 ml
30 min 240 ml
I a have created a field for each of these readings for each day.
So can easily extract just those readings each day (also fields for night
shift test also)
The primary key is the date field
Now what I need to do is to graph a curve ml on y axis and time on x axis.
Very simple to do on a piece of graph paper. And I can probably figure out
how to get excel to do that for one set of data.
But what is useful, is to see the curves on top of each other. The manual
way of doing that is to plot the curve on a transparent sheet of paper each
day and to then overlay them so can see what is really happening. I want to
be able to do this in excel.
Any suggestions?
I bet it is relatively simple as I would think there are lots of times other
analyses of this type are done in the real world. I just cannot quite get my
brain working in the right way.
