Don't know what you mean here.  "3 Hrs 45 mins" is not a valid time input 
into Excel.  How exactly did you enter this value?

OK, I think you might have entered 3.45 (this is a three then a full-stop 
then a four and then a five).  This does indeed show 10:48 if the formatting 
is hh:mm.

3.45 is 3.45 DAYS, which is 3 days, 10 hours and 48 minutes.  But you've 
instructed it only to show you hh:mm so you don't see the date part of this 
date field.  The actual value is 10:48 on 3rd January 1900.

Date time fields are floating point numbers.  1 is one day; 0.5 is 12 hours; 
0.45 is 10:48.  0 is 0th January 1900 which is the base date for Excel.

Hours and minutes are entered using a colon as a separator, not a decimal 
point.

3:45 (i.e. with a colon) is indeed 3 hours and 45 minutes.
