" and if Publisher does not support web sites then what
compatible solution do I now suggest. I am a firm believer in backing the
main supplier and using additional compatible software for other solutions
if need be. But to use sharepoint and online updating (great) I want web
software and database (simple affordable solutions for small business). "

To answer both posts at once....

Google's app is web based, so it's going to be as limited as all the other
applications .. for a homepage sure its' ok.. for business no way.

Greg quotes

"the product does compete directly with Microsoft's FrontPage
> software."

Google's web based application cannot and never can compete against
FrontPage or any other Web editor good or bad (including notepad and DW)...
precisely because it's web based... you have virtually no control over
metas, file names and especially the domain name which does not belong to
you.

I find it an extremely weird quote .. perhaps the quote on the page it was
found on .... the writer has misquoted ... has to be, no one with any
experience of WD would say that, unless they were just trying to poke fun by
comparing it to FP of course .... very funny ha ha.... anyone with any
experience and who dislikes FP just because, will know a web based hosting
setup can't compete with ANY editor.

For making sites web based hosting.. it's for newbie's to get their feet
wet... just as it's always been.

Any business even the one's that consider it a Extra Marketing Tool, need to
think about presentation. If I buy from a business on the net I want to know
they know what they are doing, I want to know they think enough of their
business to invest in the right tool for the job. Publisher in any version
will never cut it as it does not produce the correct coding for a web page
and it is not a web editor. If you want to not buy the new products from ms
due to price, then get yourself a free wysiwyg editor rather than use
publisher (OR Word ) as WEB Editor -any day of the week - HOWEVER, as soon
as the new products come out people start selling the old one's .. that's
the time to pick up FrontPage 2003 and at the very least FrontPage 2002....
but FrontPage 2003 if you can....

Google are just producing what used to be around in droves six or seven
years ago... I love Google - as a search engine - anything else they do ..
they MIGHT do better than others that's debatable, but it's just the same as
dozen others near enough....

If you have a homepage I'd go for it, at least the advertising won't be as
in your face and out of place as other web based hosting.

If you have a business site, if you selling something that's a resounding
not just NO but Hell NO. (pardon the french)

For a business site you need CONTROL .. you need to establish SEO (Search
Engine Optimisation) If you need ecommerce you need a cart where you have
control over the metas and the file names, you need a site where you have
control over the file names, you need a site name (domain) where you have
control and continuing control of your BRAND name, where you can use alt
attributes and much much more... You need to not look like every other site
that uses the generic templates Google (and other similar applications
produce) (and yes FrontPage has some of it's own... but at that point you
have a choice to use them or not to use them, you still don't need to know
much html to produce something original in FrontPage.. but you have a
CHOICE)

If your in business, start as you mean to go on otherwise your selling
yourself short. FrontPage and Expression Web Designer are going to save you
tons of time (and I don't mean using the generic stuff) specially on
maintenance, but you can still produce a site without having to use
Publisher or Google, just by looking around for the free stuff if price is a
problem.

Grey says

"So, if you have better info, I'd love to hear your take"

What info is needed? It's really a non starter and as plain as the nose on
your face.... Google, publisher and word don't compete against any WEB
editor .. any ... not just FrontPage or Expression WD.

As a web based application .. it's as good as any other I suppose... it does
have the added buzz that along with sensible adverts, it has a huge
community base already, so if you want such a set up for your homepage or
information site, go for that, with good content you could even make enough
from adverts to buy a web editor and domain of your own (ironically)

Janine says

" and if Publisher does not support web sites then what
compatible solution do I now suggest.

I hate to tell you this but Publisher is, was and always be a Desktop
Publisher ... it never was and never will be and never can be web editor of
any sort.... yes you can stick some sort of hash and get it on the net but
it won't be a web page in any recognisable format, and never recommend it
for businesses, yes recommend using to great aunt betty who already has it
and is going to show it to five family members, she won't know any
different, but a business? Shudder.

If you don't want to recommend Expression WD to small businesses (the NEW
FrontPage - FP on steroids with a name change) ... then find a free wysiwg
editor and recommend that... but please never recommend using Publisher as a
web editor because it most emphatically is not.. it's a pretty good Desktop
publisher though ;) For a company intranet or a company enterprise then the
big boy is Sharepoint Web Designer Microsoft wise.

These two posts would be funny if they were not so serious as to mislead
people into thinking such was such..

Folks.... if you get anything out of this thread... here a few things to
remember.

EWD is the new FP (no matter the name change) but on Steroids.
Web based hosting can never compete with ANY WEB Editor. (even for Homepage
sites)
Publisher and Word are NOT Web Editors, but are good at Desktop Publishing
and Word Processing.
Whatever your WEB Editor, it's the webmaster that makes the site NOT the
Tool.
If your in Business, start as you mean to go on, presentation and branding
count just as much.. and don't have to cost an arm and a leg.

On another note, Expression Graphic Editor is for those that liked Image
Composer ... and those that like using Tablets... best Graphic editor MS
have produced since IC.
