[mso] Re: Frequent Save Changes Prompt in Word 2002

My normal.dot is literally a blank page just with margin settings. The
only thing that might be causing it - from what I can deduce from
everybody's replies - is that for some reason Word isn't finding our
networked printer on start up very reliably. This seems to have started
when we loaded a proprietary program that has its own virtual printer (bit
like PDF995) to create pdf files. Then I get messages from Word asking me
if I want to continue waiting for the default printer to load.

But this problem with prompting to save changes to normal.dot isn't
happening consistently with the occurrences of not finding the printer. I
am running Adobe Reader but can't find where to look for any plug-ins. As
far as I know I've not changed anything anyway, so it would have been down
to an auto-update if this had been the case.

My PC is virus checked every day and my virus definitions are updated each
morning so I don't *think* it's virus activity. As Ray S says, this is
more nuisance than real issue but one day I'm gonna save it by mistake and
probably open some floodwaters!

Thanks guys! Will battle on and try to find out what's really causing it.
But I'm baffled for now! LOL

Anne

Also check Tools>Templates and Addins and see if anything is running in
there.

What is MSFilter.dot anyway? It may not cause this when you "open" it,
but it sure could be causing it since it's in your startup folder (since
using a template as a template and opening a template are totally
different things)....do you know how it got there and what it is?

If you can't locate any fields like Ray suggests, then maybe you need to
closely examine the documents where this happens and see if you can find
the common denominator.

You running Adobe Acrobat? Norton AV? Both of them have plug-ins for
Office that can cause this also.

The most common culprit for this is a field. If your document has a field
for - say - the date of the letter or a 'last printed' time, this will
update on openeing and trigger the need for a 'save changes' dialogue.
