Thanks Pruscoe,
I see that underscored spaces instead of the typed underscore does allow the
underscores to line up.
But if I use spaces after the merge field, any subsequent entry title will
be pushed to the right or shortened based upon the length of the merge field's
results, so that each resulting form will have any second and subsequent
entry title and data all over the place.
E.G.,
Name: <<mergefield>>_______ Sex: <<mergefield>>__ Age: <mergefield>>___
... might become
Name: Joe______ Sex: M__ Age: 36____
Name: Samantha______ Sex: F__ Age: 9____
(Note: all <<mergefield>>s are underscored, as are the resulting data)
In my case in an attempt to keep subsequent title/data fields aligned across
the resulting forms, I use tabs with leading underscores (which aren't
aligned). And this causes another problem over and above the misaligned
underscores ... the location where the tab character is inserted in the text is
not
underscored.
So in the case of: Name: <<mergefield>>{(leading underscore)tab} Sex: ...
etc.
the result is: Name: Joe{space}______ Sex: ... etc.
I think that these are Word problems/bugs that should be addressed my our
Microsoft Office developers, don't you think?

know what you mean, Larry, and it is not limited to merge-type fields. I
think your issue has to do with the fact that the underlines for text do
not
line up with the underscore "_" character. So if you are using that
character
for the portion before and after the merge fields, that is the reason. The
fix is to use underlined spaces instead.
