  I suggest the you use the option "VALIDATION" under it you could create a 
list. As i see it, the option to be inputted is limited to a set of choices 
(postal code). By using the "validation - list" you standardize the data to be 
inputted in the field (spacing, lower or upper case, zero and O and other 
characters that could be misrepresented.)

I am not sure if formating is possible, I would have used the formula 
=(UPPER(LEFT(A5,3))&" "&UPPER(RIGHT(A5,3))) Assuming original input
is in A5
