Sorry for the long post in advance, but I saved this reply from Greg
Chapman when I was having the problem with the 3D's in my emails and found
it very useful:

Hi Michele!

First, from what I saw of Outlook's behavior with UUENCODE, I retract any
recommendation to use the format if you expect to be able to work with
attachments in the future. It's a shame they mucked that standard up so
badly in Outlook!

The plain text settings are primarily for those who do not want to send HTML
or RTF documents by default and do not want their plain text delivered with
a peppering of uqual signs and inappropriate digits. I am one such
luddite.<g>

Dealign with the registry is fairly straightforward and most of the things
you can do there will have no bad affect on a system. Incorrectly adding
values for an application typically results in a problem localized to that
application. That's good!

Even though this list is for Office, here's a quick and easy way to manage
any change you're about to perform in the registry.

1. Unless you have to set permissions on a registry key, avoid using
regedt32. Regedit is a much more tactile environment for straight editing.
2. Remember that any change you make is committed to the registry database
immediately and there is no 'undo' in the editor 3. Always back up any key
to/under which you are about to make a change.
             A. Highlight the key or value you are about to change
             B. From the File menu, choose Export.
             C. Make sure the file type is set to .REG files (these are text
files that can also be automagically merged back into the database)
             D. Give the new export a descriptive name so you know
where/what for this entry served

If you have to restore one of these backups, you simply double click on it
from within Windows Explorer and answer the questions it asks. Do remember
that if you have added an entry or key that didn't exist before, merging the
backup back into the registry will not remove your new entry. That will have
to be manually removed from within regedit.

A DWORD entry is a hexadecimal entry (in other words, it's value is not text
based) represented in binary (i.e., with 0's and 1's). To add a new
DWORD:
1. Highlight the key to which the new DWORD will be added 2. From the Edit
menu, choose New-> DWORD value 3. Type in the name of the new DWORD entry
and press Enter 4. Double click the new entry and set its value 5. Close
regedit 6. Close and restart the application whose registry keys you've
modified.

That should get you by. If you need additional help, feel free to contact me
offlist unless Linda decides that this isn't too far OT.

Hope that helps!

Andrew--

I checked and double-checked, and I definitely don't send in anything = but
plain text, and nothing listing 'Microsoft Word' is checke in my = options.
It could be that my machine is also a very heavy development machine with a
*lot* of Office automation stuff going on, so maybe values are being
overwritten. Stranger things have happened. Until I find out, I'll stop
posting from this machine, and start using another.

Sorry, Jim:

I'm surprised that you send in Plain Text and still have this problem. = I
struggle with the way this list works, or I'd try and find the reference =
for you in the Archives. Linda is our lady, I suspect ;)
