Yes, the faint square brackets disappear when I uncheck "show bookmarks". Now 
I need to contact the author of the paper to ask why he was using bookmarks. 
The locations don't make sense, and I don't see anything that refers to 
bookmarks. I wonder whether bookmarks in this case are at all related to his 
placement of footnotes.
