Use an array formula for this.
Here's my mini tutorial on array formulas...it should show you how to do
this easily:

Subject: [mso] Excel something like countif
I know there's a way to do this, I just don't remember it, and I don't
remember enough to ask the help file a smart question.
Here's what I need to do. I have a spreadsheet in which I am keeping
attendance at our Boys & Girls Club. I have a sneaking suspicion that
while our attendence is going up, we are losing our boys. So, right now,
I use countif to tell me the total of kids on a day (there is a column for
a day and there are x's if they are there--Rows are kids' names). Below
that count, though, I want to know how many boys and how many girls. So,
if a row has an x on it, instead of counting just then, I want it to go
look at say, column D and count if column d (the column for boy/girl) has
a "b" in it AND column AW (the column for the given day) has an "x". I'm
imagining two rows underneath the total of the days--one row for boys and
one row for girls.
Thanks in advance,
Kathie
