Corrupt files can be caused by many things....if it's too large, it =
risks
corruption....if someone had it opened and crashed, it could corrupt the
file....sometimes a location on a drive or folder can get corrupt and
therefore the files there do also....or, sometimes files just get =
corrupt
for no obvious reason....I doubt it had anything to do with Win2k....I =
see
files become corrupt for no obvious reason all the time...it just =
happens
and it happens more often with larger files, and especially ones that =
have a
lot of graphics in them.
No real way to avoid corruption....except for the size thing....but the
important thing is to keep backups and update the backups regularly so =
if it
happens again, you don't lose it.

Subject: [mso] Excel on W2K problem
Sorry for the cross-post - this is both an office and a W2K question...
=20
I just got a call from a friend who thought she lost an Excel file.
=20
Office 2000 on a W2K Pro PC
=20
I found the file and opened it every way I could - Excel just flashed =
and
went back to a Book 1 blank sheet.
=20
Here's the W2K part - I went to restore the file from W2K backup and if =
kept
acting dumb when I asked it to catalog the backup file - kind of like =
Excel
flashing.
=20
I checked for virii (none) and ran AdAware and Spybot (lots of normal =
crap,
but nothing serious).
=20
I brought it home and Excel 2003 opened it but said it was so corrupted =
it
couldn't fix it.
=20
Server 2003 restored the backup fine.
=20
So, two questions:
=20
What could have caused the corruption (so it doesn't happen again)? and
=20
What could be wrong with the W2K to act this way? (Other W2K PCs on the
same network couldn't open it either, but then it was already corrupt!)
=20
All help appreciated,
=20
Mark
