[mso] Excel on W2K problem

Sorry for the cross-post - this is both an office and a W2K question...
I just got a call from a friend who thought she lost an Excel file.
Office 2000 on a W2K Pro PC
I found the file and opened it every way I could - Excel just flashed and
went back to a Book 1 blank sheet.
Here's the W2K part - I went to restore the file from W2K backup and if kept
acting dumb when I asked it to catalog the backup file - kind of like Excel
flashing.
I checked for virii (none) and ran AdAware and Spybot (lots of normal crap,
but nothing serious).
I brought it home and Excel 2003 opened it but said it was so corrupted it
couldn't fix it.
Server 2003 restored the backup fine.
So, two questions:
What could have caused the corruption (so it doesn't happen again)? and
What could be wrong with the W2K to act this way? (Other W2K PCs on the
same network couldn't open it either, but then it was already corrupt!)
All help appreciated,
Mark
