Robert --- be sure to remove the "3D" from Wilson's formula
I was assuming some of the options might have the same first letter, and
therefore Robert would assign a different letter for some of them, that's
why I went with a vlookup. But, yup, if every one will have a different
first letter, this formula is indeed simpler :-)

Or just put the formula
=3DLEFT(A1,1)
on the cell where you want the value, supposing your dropdown list is in=
column A1
Then whenever you select a value from the dropdown list the first character=
will be placed in the cell with the formula.
