I'm not sure why changing the formatting 'after the fact' doesn't work but I
have seen it many times (if you select each cell, press F2, then Enter, the new
format will be applied to that cell). The values to be matched in the Vlookup
must be the same format. Unless you are going to do math with them, the account
numbers should probably be formatted as text. An easy way to reformat them all
at once (pre-2007 instructions):
Select all the accounts numbers. From the Data menu, select Text to Columns >>
Fixed Width >> Next >> Next >> Text >> Finish.
You are using Text to Columns to convert the numbers to text in place.
Hope this helps,
Hutch

I am trying to use a VLookup to bring in a new value on my spreadsheet. The
comparison is of GL account numbers, however, on one spreadsheet, the numbers
are formatted as numbers (when I highlight 2 or more of them, it whows me the
total), however on the other spreadsheet those GL account numbers are not
formatted as numbers (again, I hightlight 2 or more of them, and it gives me NO
subtotal), I don't care if they are formatted as numbers or text, just as
long as aI can compare the 2 different fields to get my new value for my lookup.
When I go into the edit/format/cells and try to change either of the
spreadsheets to number or text or general, the format does not change, and
therefore, I cannot compare the 2. What am I missing, and what would keep my
formats from changing? I've have looked at the protection, and there seems
to be none.
Can anyone help with this?
Thanks in advance!
