[mso] Excel formatting

I am trying to use a VLookup to bring in a new value on my spreadsheet. The
comparison is of GL account numbers, however, on one spreadsheet, the numbers
are formatted as numbers (when I highlight 2 or more of them, it whows me the
total), however on the other spreadsheet those GL account numbers are not
formatted as numbers (again, I hightlight 2 or more of them, and it gives me NO
subtotal), I don't care if they are formatted as numbers or text, just as long
as aI can compare the 2 different fields to get my new value for my lookup.
When I go into the edit/format/cells and try to change either of the
spreadsheets to number or text or general, the format does not change, and
therefore, I cannot compare the 2. What am I missing, and what would keep my
formats from changing? I've have looked at the protection, and there seems to
be none.

Can anyone help with this?

Thanks in advance!
