TONS of stuff.
They can fix/change documents...but the biggest reason for them is a dynamic
link to information. Like using them to instantly add an address to a
letter. If you see a smart tag in a letter, you can click it and go right to
the web for further info...like stock quotes, info about a person...tons of
stuff. They're very valuable. Unfortunately, few folks know/bother to learn
how to use them. So for the majority of users, they're a nuisance. Too bad!
