[mso] Re: Delay opening office files from desktop

<<Not sure why it

The main difference between launching a file from a desktop shortcut and
launching the file from within the program is this: when you double click a
desktop icon, the program itself has to launch before the file opens; when
you launch it from within the program, the program has obviously already
launched.

Therefore, I would check your XLSTART folder (search your hard drive for
XLSTART to find it) to see if there's anything in there that needs to start
when Excel starts ... That would cause some delay. Also check all Excel
addins ... Most of them have to launch when Excel starts too (Tools >
Add-ins).

Does the same thing happen with Word documents? If so, check for stuff that
starts whenever you launch ANY Office program (a good example is Norton's AV
plugin for Office ... You can, and should, turn this off in Norton's Options
... It is not needed.)

If you have your antivirus program set to check documents on opening this
could create the effect of delaying the file from opening. Not sure why it
would make a difference opening from a desktop shortcut rather than within
the file though, unless your shortcuts point to remote network locations
rather than files stored on your own PC?
