I think the problem you are seeing here is that the original cell has not been
entered as a DATE as you have indicated. The original cells have been entered
as TEXT and when you grab the fill handle and extend the column down you get a
TEXT progression of similar data.
Note that there is no rollover to the next month once you get to the end of
October:
01st Oct 2007
02nd oct 2007
03rd oct 2007
.
.
.
31st Oct 2007
32nd Oct 2007
33rd Oct 2007
.
.
.
I'm not sure you can manipulate this TEXT field directly using standard Excel
to get what you want, but you may be able to create a simple lookup table or
something similar to get the output to display as you need.
Create a lookup sheet once and then add it to your various workbooks as
needed with the associated code. There are several ways you could get your
results to display: hide columns, copy to a new sheet, copy paste special
values in the original cells --- it just depends on what you are most
comfortable doing and how you need to use the resulting cells. This lookup
data column could not be used for calculations, you would need the original
data to be entered as a DATE in order to do calcualtions on those cells.

Thanks for your reply Mr David
See when we enter the date in excel as 01st Oct 2007 and use the fill
handle and drag it down, excel automatically recognises the series and
fills the same as 02nd oct 2007, 03rd oct 2007 etc. Hence I put forth a
question that since excel is able to internally recognise the formats,
is there by any chance we change the format as above.
When I enter the date as 01-oct-2007 and set an format to that, it
should change to 01st oct 2007.
Hope I am clear now.

Sorry, not with you.
What specific format does Excel recognise?
What is the issue you have with changing the format?
