[mso] Re: Database Integrity

Hello again,

Thanks very much. I appreciate the "food for thought" and the logic of the
solutions.

:)

I finally got it all together...
I just wish I could remember where I set it down.

Carol,

This one is a little fun. There are several options:

1 The first and best option of course is to make them stop reusing the
numbers, this seems easiest.
2 Since (1) is not likely to happen, you can create a multiple Primary Key,
including the vehicle number and say, the Vehicle make/model/year etc.
3 This one is the most work, but probably your best option. Since vehicles
are replaced, you can have the vehicle # displayed but use an autonumber in
the table and as what is stored. Then when you create your source record
for the pulldown list, include only the active vehicle. You will need to
add a retired field to your table but this will ensure that you have the
cehicle number displayed and the appropriate mileage attributed to the
appropriate vehicle as well.

Hello,

I have a question concerning Database Integrity. I hope this is an
applicable topic. If not please advise.

I am creating a database of Vehicles/Activities/MilesDriven/FuelUsed for our
local school system. I need to be able to track which vehicle goes on what
activity and track the amount of miles being racked up on the vehicles.

Now that is not a big deal BUT when the school purchases a NEW vehicle they
replace an old vehicle giving it the same number. How can I protect the
data integrity (i.e., relationship between vehicles/milesdriven/activity)
but use the SAME NUMBER to identify a different vehicle?

I am not very proficient with databases so am taking this very slowly as to
hopefully not muck it up to much.

Thanks very much for any advice/responses you may offer.

Best regards,

Hello Fellow Office Dweebs,

This is my first post. (Hi Linda, Hi Dian).

I am proficient with MS Access. I don't write code, but I can do
just about everything else. Perhaps I can answer some of the basic
MS Access questions / problems.

More Later.
