[mso] Creating an Index & page numbering: Problem

I am the guy who has been trying to create a document, first with
table of contents but when they did not alphabetize, I switched to Index.
Ok, creating the document and making an index worked!!! Thank you!
But, an annoyance, alas. I decided to add page numbering, and went to
Insert, Page Numbering. For some reason, it has numbered all my pages
to 1 (one), 2, 1, 2, 1, 2, and so on all way through the end. When I
redid the index (I thought it might correct itself), all the pages
were changed to 1, 2, 1, 2, 1, 2, 1, 2, 1, 2, 1, 2, and so on.
Can I prevent this? This isn't in my Word book. Yes, I can rebuild
the document (the data is in Excel), so if doing that resolves the
issue, I would be grateful to learn.
Thank you.
Robert
