You can use Advanced Filter feature to filter out overlapping data in Column A by selecting all data (including column headings) and then in the Advanced Filter dialogbox, toggling on "unique records only" checkbox. All rows with overlapping data in Column A becomes hidden. Then, copy the data to a new sheet or column. You will get sequential rows of unique values only. Then you can count this data.
