I agree with Andrew. I think they are talking about a regular Excel file. I
know several people who have genealogy information that they have saved as
Excel files, but this poster seems to want to go the other way. Have you
tried opening the files in Excel and see what you get?

(By the way, the way to get regular XLS files into GEDCOM is to save them as
comma separated values (CSV) files and import those files into your GEDCOM
processor of choice.
