Thank you very much. I did not know how to do that, but in my case, 
after rebooting the computer, the gray background came back. I must have 
something else wrong somewhere.

I'm late in this discussion.

If you click IN the TOC, the background will always turn grey to show you
are "in" a field. If you click OUTSIDE the TOC it will return to normal.

I do not know if this is in ANY way related to this post. If not, please
ignore.
