[mso] Can't Convert DOCX Files

To All,

I am unable to open a DOCX file on my primary PC, but it does open on an older
PC (Dell 4550). Both PCs are running Word 2003 and I have installed the MS
File Compatibility Pack ( FileFormatConverters.exe ) on both PCs. The newer PC
is fully updated (SP3 on WinXP Pro and on Word 2003).

The only response on the new PC when I try to open the DOCX file is that Word
2003 opens and displays an error window containing, "There was a problem
opening the file".

The strangest fact of all is that new format XLSX spreadsheets from the same
person are converted and open fine in both PCs.

Can anyone suggest why The Compatibility Pack is able to convert XLSX files
but not DOCX files. Both kinds of files are coming from a friend who purchased
a new laptop running WinXP Pro and Office 2007. He is reluctant to change the
default file formats. The larger problem is that he will soon be exchanging
files with many of the members of our club. Those people will be asking me how
to make the Compatibility Pack work for them.

I'm wondering whether I may have some kind of security option in Word 2003 on
my newer PC which is preventing the conversion. What else could be causing the
conversion to fail?

Thanks for the help.

Ray Shapp
