That could well be the answer. It hasn't caused any problems but I didn't
want to find out that it was some sort of virus - had that years ago when
Normal.dot got infected with something that added a line of text through VBA
saying something like "All empires will fall ....."

It probably came from converting the document from one file format to
another.  Word sometimes puts PRIVATE fields in to help with converting = a
document back to its original format e.g. wordperfect to Word and back
again.

I Know nothing about Code in Word, but have inherited a WP exercise from = a
colleague. I am using Win2K+OfficeXP and, when I activate "Show/Hide", = at
the end of a line (formatted Normal, 14pt Arial, Bold and Shaded 25% =
Grey), I see: {PRIVATE "TYPE=3D=3DPICT;ALT=3D"}
