Well in editing, I have different rates for different projects. Some
projects have different rates for different parts. I get paid by the page,
but I could get paid per project, per hour, or per word. Sometimes chapters
are inserted or removed, causing subsequent chapters to be renumbered. Some
jobs have images billed sepatately from the text. In that case, two images
count as one page. Sometimes, depending on circumstances, rates change
during the course of a project, even for part of the project.
In court reporting, there is a transcript page rate and a daily minimum. But
I don't type the transcripts myself, and in most cases, I have to bill
before the transcript is typed. So my invoices show my page estimates and
blanks for the client to fill in the number of transcript pages. Some jobs
have multiple cases, or multiple witnesses for single cases. Even multi-day
trials have to be broken down by each day.
I bill for expenses on most court-reporting jobs (which can include mileage,
parking, tolls, meals, lodging, and occasionally, some other expenses).
In addition to billing, I need to keep track of each job--when different
parts are due, when they are finished.
What's the name of your book? If it will help me do this, I'll buy it.
Joel
BTW, I don't share your confidence in Norton Antivirus.

Yes...both Excel and Access can do this. Check out Excel's "Spreadsheet
Solutions" templates (File>New>Templates>On My Computer)...there's one for
an invoice. You can tweak it anyway you want so it calculates everything
correctly for you...though this will require that you know how formulas work
in Excel. You need to unprotect the template to make changes.
Probably a little more detail on exactly what type of "flexibility" you need
would help people answer your questions. But, based on what you've said so
far, I believe Excel will do everything you want.
I cover templates and how to customize invoices completely in my book, so
I'm guessing my publisher might scream if I tell you too much more LOL ...
But this should point you in the right direction, if you choose to use
Excel.
