try using this formula:



=SUM(G8,J8,L8,N8)/COUNTIF(G8:N8,">0")

this is assuming that the cells in between G8 and N8 doesnt contain numeric 
data.

but if it does, could you give more information so we can create a work around 
to achieved your objective.

AverageIF is only avalible in Excel 2007 which I don't have so some of
this is conjecture.
You are using the formula according to its rules but MS limits all the
IF functions to contiguous ranges.
You could try an array formula to simulate this function
If the cells to be skipped contain text they will be ignored as well as
blanks=20
