[mso] Automated hyperlink creation??

I have a client who is using Excel as an index/file manager for scanned
docs. The have a spreadsheet setup as a database, with each line
representing a customer job. There are 10-12 fields that contain the
specifics of the job, and 4 fields that contain hyperlinks to scanned
documents (hand written field notes, signature sheets, etc). They would like
to be able to automatically create the hyperlink, i.e.. select the field,
click the "scan" button, and be done. I've done quite a bit of VBA
programming, but I honestly don't know where to start on this one. Has
anyone setup something similar? Or seen a commercial program/addin?? I've
looked at several library programs, which work fine for organizing the docs,
but don't give the opportunity to attach additional data to the group of
scans.
Any info to get me started in the right direction will be greatly
appreciated!
Thanks
