Hi James,

For CatNum I have the following set:
Data Type: Text
Field Size: 15
Required: yes
Allow Zero Length: no
Indexed: no
Unicode Compression: yes

For ItemNum I have the following set:
Data Type: Text
Field Size: 7
Required: no
Allow Zero Length: yes
Indexed: no
Unicode Compression: yes

All other options are blank for those 2 fields.

See anything out of whack? I sure hope so because I really need this to
work.

Pam

Pam,

Have you changed the setting that reads Allow Zero Length for the second
field? It should be on the bottom half of the page in design mode when you
highlight the second field. If you don't have that set to yes, it will
require that you have something there.

I need the field contents to match what someone would search on. Thank you
for your help thus far.
I wonder why Access doesn't care that you've already told it... Required:
No, Indexed: No. It still requires a value. Could it be the type of field
I'm using? I have it set as a text field currently.

Very odd. You may end up having to list the item number as 0

It's telling me that index or primary key cannot contain a null value.
I have only the 2 fields set as the primary keys, catNum is set to be
required, itemNum is not.

What is the error you are getting?

It should be requiring you to have a unique catnum if you have no itemnum.

Hi James,
I set up a new table as you suggested, did the primary key as you
described, but even though I told it Yes on Required for CatNum and No on
Required for the ItemNum it still won't let me save a record if there is
nothing in the ItemNum field. Any suggestions?

Pam,

You can create a dual primary field. Just create a new table for now to do
this. Create the table, using CatNum, and ItemNum rather than the pound
sign. (The pound sign can cause other problems down the road.) In the
design view highlight both these fields and click on the Primary Key icon.
You will have a dual primary key enabled. Under CatNum, change the Required
field to Yes.

With this configuration, you will be allowed to have any number of the same
category you want and any number of the same item you want, as long as both
are not exact duplicates of another set.

In order to check for existing duplicates, do an Append query from your
existing table to your new table. When you execute it, you will get an
error message telling you that ## of records won't be added due to key
violations. Click Ok to this. You will now have a new table with no
duplicate entries.

If you need any help with this just holler.
