Paper mills are better than they used to be, but they are still not great if you live too close! I lived in Vermont for many years where there were lots of lumber camps and the state's economy depended on people needing wood. (tho I think it was more for building than it was for paper) But...aren't papermills supposed to be one of the worst polluters or something? I'd hate to think that paper was a thing of the past....as much as I love my computers, I still really treasure REAL books too. Linda- You all print as much as you need. In South Carolina there are hundreds of thousands of acres of Pine trees that have been planted just like any other crop, then harvested just to make paper. The only difference between them and other crops, such as Corn or Soybeans, is that the time between planting and harvesting is longer. Once the trees are harvested, new seedlings are planted to start the next crop.
