You can fix this and create the symbol in a sneaky way using the EQ
field with an 'overstrike' switch. Here's how I created it:

{EQ \o(c,-)}

Except that the dash you see there wasn't a dash, but a line higher up.
If you choose 'insert symbol' when you get that far, the inster symbol
dialog numbers the character 02C9.

The result will be exactly what you describe - a lower case 'c' with a
line above it.

Thanks, but Word does not have this symbol in its vast collection.  I
was hoping it could be created with some clever "tricks of the trade" by
some "clever users".  I appreciate your help though.  :)
